Inflammation, Muscle Strength, and Urinary Control
Low vitamin D levels have also been linked to chronic low-grade inflammation throughout the body.
In the bladder, inflammation may increase nerve sensitivity and create stronger sensations of urgency, even when the bladder is not completely full.
Vitamin D also supports muscle strength, including the pelvic floor muscles that help maintain urinary control. Weakness in these muscles may make it harder to comfortably hold urine during the night.
This may be particularly important in:
- Older adults
- Postmenopausal women
- Individuals with nutritional deficiencies
Some observational studies have reported that people with lower vitamin D levels experience higher rates of nocturia. Other studies have suggested that correcting a deficiency may improve urinary symptoms in certain individuals.
However, researchers emphasize that these findings do not prove vitamin D directly causes or cures nocturia. Instead, vitamin D may act as one contributing factor within a larger system affecting bladder health.
