More Than a Cosmetic Concern
Finding an occasional coarse hair on your chin is very common, especially for women as hormone levels change with age. But if chin hairs become thicker, darker, or more numerous over time, they can sometimes reflect underlying hormonal or medical changes worth paying attention to.
1. Hormonal Changes
The most common reason for chin hair growth is an increase in androgens (often called “male hormones,” though all women naturally produce them too). Even mild hormonal shifts can stimulate hair growth around the chin and jawline.
Possible causes include:
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
- Menopause
- Switching or stopping birth control
- Thyroid disorders
Other symptoms that may appear alongside chin hair include:
- Acne
- Irregular periods
- Weight gain
- Oily skin
If several of these occur together, it’s a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional about hormone testing.
