However, some medicines have what are known as anticholinergic effects. These drugs reduce the action of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in memory, attention, muscle activity, and other functions.

Researchers have been studying whether long-term exposure to medications with stronger anticholinergic activity may be associated with a greater risk of cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, or dementia in some older adults.

The researchers found that people using at least one medication with anticholinergic properties had a higher likelihood of developing mild cognitive impairment compared with people who were not using such medications.

The association appeared stronger among people who already had genetic or biological markers associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

However, this kind of observational research cannot prove that the medication itself was the sole cause of later cognitive decline.

The most important takeaway is not to fear every medication, but to understand that the total “anticholinergic burden” may matter—especially in older adults taking several medicines at the same time.
