Instead of cracking the key’s encryption, criminals attempt to extend the communication between a vehicle and a legitimate key that is physically farther away.
For example, if a key is stored near the front door of a house, specialized equipment may sometimes relay signals between the parked vehicle and the key.
The vehicle can then behave as though the authorized key were nearby.
Not Every Keyless Vehicle Is Equally Vulnerable
Automakers have responded with improved security technologies.
Some newer fobs use motion sensors and stop transmitting after they have remained stationary for a period of time.
Other vehicles use more precise distance-measuring technologies or allow passive entry to be disabled.
The effectiveness of these protections depends on the vehicle and key system.
Where You Store the Key at Home Matters
If your vehicle has passive keyless entry, avoid automatically leaving the fob immediately beside an exterior door or window.
Keeping it farther inside the home may reduce the chance that its signal can be reached from outside.
Signal-Blocking Pouches
A properly functioning signal-blocking pouch, often called a Faraday pouch, can prevent a key fob from communicating while stored inside it.
If you use one, test it.
Place the key in the pouch, close it completely, and approach the vehicle.
If the car still unlocks, the pouch is not adequately blocking the signal or is not closed correctly.
Traditional Physical Security Still Has Value
Electronic security does not make mechanical deterrents obsolete.
A visible steering-wheel lock can add another obstacle for a thief and may discourage opportunistic attempts.
Layered security is generally more useful than relying on any one device.
